Coding Framework and Source Codebook — Version 1

Coding Framework and Source Codebook — Version 1

This codebook operationalizes the research brief for consistent use across parenting manuals, magazines, advice columns, professional journals, institutional materials, religious literature, memoirs, oral histories, interviews, and case studies.

General coding rules

1. Source information schema

2. Conception of the child schema

Code all applicable categories:

Supplementary fields: productive worker, soul requiring salvation, apprentice or future provider, emotionally precious child, patient or diagnostic subject, student, delinquent threat, bearer of rights, and family representative. Record the stated purpose of childhood: obedience, salvation, usefulness, virtue, independence, gentility, occupational preparation, citizenship, adjustment, self-expression, happiness, attachment, achievement, or safety.

3. Conception of the parent schema

Code all applicable categories:

Supplementary fields: household governor, religious instructor, protector, companion, breadwinner, emotional manager, representative of family honor, advocate before institutions, object of professional supervision, and co-client in family treatment.

4. Responsibility for relationship quality schema

Choose the dominant allocation and record secondary allocations where present:

Operational questions: Who must initiate conversation? Who must rebuild trust? Who must apologize? Who must accommodate developmental or emotional limits? Is closeness treated as natural, earned, owed, optional, maternal, or deliberately cultivated? Does provision count as sufficient proof of love? Does hierarchy coexist with parental responsibility for affection?

5. Response to conflict schema

Code all recommended or described responses:

Supplementary fields: silence or avoidance, mediation by the other parent, clergy intervention, school discipline, institutional removal, apology, restitution, reconciliation without examination, compliance restoration, validation, and accommodation of disability or trauma.

6. View of expertise schema

Code all applicable relationships:

Supplementary fields: experts replace kin or clergy, regulate immigrant or poor families, normalize behavior, confer status or modernity, reduce blame, relocate blame, authorize coercion, encourage parental accountability, or provide a vocabulary for avoidance.

Cross-cutting interpretive fields

Reliability plan

The codebook is complete enough to begin collection but not yet validated. A later pilot will independently code a deliberately diverse sample of at least eight sources spanning periods, genres, gender targets, and social groups. Disagreements will be logged, definitions revised, and ambiguous categories documented before the full comparison table is finalized.
