Research Note: Impact on Biblical Archaeology & Historiographical Debates

Project: Moabite Stone Research Initiative
Phase: Phase 4 - Cultural, Ideological & Historiographical Impact

1. The 19th-Century Revolution in Levantine Archaeology

The 1868 discovery of the Mesha Stele transformed Levantine antiquarianism into scientific archaeology. As the first direct, non-biblical extra-textual confirmation of a monarch mentioned in 2 Kings, the stele catalyzed the establishment of permanent archaeological bodies in Jerusalem, including the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF, 1865), the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft (DOG, 1898), and the École Biblique et Archéologique Française (1890).

2. Historiographical Schools & State Formation Models

3. Radiocarbon Science and Anchoring Levantine Chronology

The Mesha Stele provides a fixed historical anchor (c. 840 BCE) defining the transition from Late Iron IIA to Early Iron IIB. AMS radiocarbon ($^{14}\text{C}$) dating of destruction horizons at Khirbat Ataruz (Stratum 11, dated 860–840 BCE) and civic podiums at Dhiban directly validates the Modified Low Chronology framework across the Southern Levant.
