Research Note: Extrabiblical Epigraphic References (Yahweh, House of David, Omri)

1. The Reference to Omri (ʿmry, Lines 4–5, 7–8)

Lines 4–5 contain the earliest extra-biblical written confirmation of Omri, founder of the Omride dynasty of Northern Israel: ʿmry mlk yśrʾl wyʿnw ʾt mʾb ymn rbn ("Omri was king of Israel, and he oppressed Moab many days").

This reference validates the biblical tradition in 1 Kings 16 regarding Omri's reign and military prowess, aligning with Neo-Assyrian cuneiform designations of Northern Israel as Bīt-Ḫumri ("House of Omri").

2. The Reference to YHWH (yhwh, Line 18)

Line 18 provides the earliest extra-biblical written attestation of the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) as the national God of Israel: wʾqḥ mšm ʾt [kly] yhwh wʾsḥb hm lpny kmš ("And I took from there the [vessels of] YHWH, and I dragged them before Chemosh").

This confirms that an official Yahwistic sanctuary/shrine equipped with sacred cultic vessels (kly) existed at Nebo during the mid-9th century BCE, recognized by foreign rulers as the primary religious symbol of Israelite presence in Transjordan.

3. The Reference to the "House of David" (bt dwd, Line 31)

In line 31, the text describes the southern territory of Horonaim. In 1994, French scholar André Lemaire proposed reading bt [d]wd ("House of David" / בֵּית דָּוִד), suggesting an extra-biblical reference to the Judahite royal dynasty holding Horonaim alongside the Tel Dan Stele (bytdwd).

In 2019, Israel Finkelstein, Nadav Na'aman, and Thomas Römer re-examined line 31, proposing instead the reading balak (King Balak of Moab). However, high-definition digital imaging (RTI/PTM) conducted by Michael Langlois (2019, 2023) confirmed the word divider after bt and the lower stroke of taw, maintaining bt dwd ("House of David") as an epigraphically sound and viable reading.
