1. Complete Critical Edition and Academic Translation

  1. Line 1: ʾnk mšʿ bn kmšyt mlk mʾb hdybny
    I am Mesha, son of Chemosh-yat, king of Moab, the Dibonite.
  2. Line 2: ʾby mlk ʿl mʾb šlšn št wʾnk mlkty ʾḥr ʾby
    My father reigned over Moab thirty years, and I reigned after my father.
  3. Line 3: wʿś hbm[t zt lkmš bqrḥh bmškb yšʿ]
    And I made this high place for Chemosh in Qarhoh, a high place of salvation,
  4. Line 4: ky hšʿny mkl hšlkn wky hrʾny bkl šnʾy
    because he saved me from all aggressors and let me look down in triumph upon all my enemies.
  5. Line 5: ʿmry mlk yśrʾl wyʿnw ʾt mʾb ymn rbn ky yʾnp kmš bʾrṣh
    Omri was king of Israel, and he oppressed Moab many days, for Chemosh was angry with his land.
  6. Line 6: wyḥlfe-h bnh wyʾmr gm hʾ ʾʿnw ʾt mʾb bymy ʾmr kdbr
    And his son succeeded him, and he too said: "I will oppress Moab." In my days he spoke thus,
  7. Line 7: wʾrʾ bh wbbth wyśrʾl ʾbd ʾbd ʿlm wyrš ʿmry ʾt ʾrṣ mhdbʾ
    but I looked upon him and his house in triumph; and Israel has perished, perished forever! Now Omri had taken possession of the land of Medeba,

    and Israel dwelt in it during his days and half the days of his son, forty years; but Chemosh restored it in my days.
  9. Line 9: wʾbn ʾt bʿlmʿn wʿś bh hʾšwḥ wʾbn ʾt qrytn
    And I built Baal-meon, and I made in it the reservoir, and I built Kiriathaim.
  10. Line 10: wʾš gd yšb bʾrṣ ʿṭrt mʿlm wybn lh mlk yśrʾl ʾt ʿṭrt
    Now the men of Gad had dwelt in the land of Ataroth from of old, and the king of Israel had built Ataroth for himself.
  11. Line 11: wʾltḥm bqr wʾḥzh wʾhrg ʾt kl hʿm [m]hqr ryt lkmš wlmʾb
    And I fought against the city and captured it; and I killed all the people of the city as a spectacle for Chemosh and Moab.
  12. Line 12: wʾšb mšm ʾt ʾrʾl dwdh wʾsḥbh lpny kmš bqryt
    And I brought back from there the altar hearth of its Dwdh/god, and I dragged it before Chemosh in Kerioth.
  13. Line 13: wʾšb bh ʾt ʾš šrn wʾt ʾš mḥrt
    And I settled in it the men of Sharon and the men of Maharath.
  14. Line 14: wyʾmr ly kmš lk ʾḥz ʾt nbw ʿl yśrʾl wʾhlk blyl
    And Chemosh said to me: "Go, take Nebo against Israel!" And I went by night
  15. Line 15: wʾltḥm bh mbqʿ hšḥrt ʿd hṣhrm wʾḥzh
    and fought against it from the break of dawn until noon; and I took it
  16. Line 16: wʾhrg klh šbʿt ʾlpn gbrn wgrn wgbrt wgrt wrḥmt
    and killed all of it, seven thousand men and resident aliens, and women and female aliens and maiden slaves;
  17. Line 17: ky lʿšt-kmš hḥrmth wʾqḥ mšm ʾt [kly] yhwh
    for I had devoted it to Ashtar-Chemosh. And I took from there the vessels of YHWH
  18. Line 18: wʾsḥb hm lpny kmš wmlk yśrʾl bnh ʾt yhṣ
    and I dragged them before Chemosh. Now the king of Israel had built Jahaz,
  19. Line 19: wyšb bh bhltḥmh by wygršh kmš mpny
    and he dwelt in it while he fought against me; but Chemosh drove him out from before me.
  20. Line 20: wʾqḥ mmʾb mʾtn ʾš kl ršh wʾśʾh byhṣ wʾḥzh lspt ʿl dybn
    And I took from Moab two hundred men, all its leaders, and I led them against Jahaz and captured it to annex it to Dibon.
  21. Line 21: ʾnk bnyty qrḥh ḥmt hyʿrn wḥmt hʿpl
    I built Qarhoh: the wall of the forests and the wall of the Ophel (citadel);
  22. Line 22: wʾnk bnyty šʿryh wʾnk bnyty mgdlth
    and I built its gates, and I built its towers;
  23. Line 23: wʾnk bnyty bt mlk wʾnk ʿśyty klʾy hʾšwḥ lmn bqrb hqr
    and I built the royal palace, and I constructed the retaining walls of the reservoir for water in the midst of the city.
  24. Line 24: wbr ʾyn bqrb hqr bqrḥh wʾmr lkl hʿm ʿśw lkm ʾš bwr bbyth
    Now there was no cistern inside the city, in Qarhoh, so I said to all the people: "Make for yourselves, each person, a cistern in his house!"
  25. Line 25: wʾnk krty hmkrtt lqrḥh bʾsry yśrʾl
    And I dug the cuttings/moats for Qarhoh using the prisoners of Israel.
  26. Line 26: ʾnk bnyty ʿrʿr wʾnk ʿśyty hmslt bʾrn-n
    I built Aroer, and I made the highway in the Arnon valley.
  27. Line 27: ʾnk bnyty bt bmt ky hrs hʾ ʾnk bnyty bṣr ky ʿyn hšʾ
    I built Beth-bamoth, for it was ruined. I built Bezer, for it was in ruins.
  28. Line 28: wšʾ dybn ḥmšn ky kl dybn mšmʿt wʾnk mlkty ʿl hmʾt bqrn
    And the chief men of Dibon were fifty, for all Dibon was subject to me. And I reigned over hundreds of towns
  29. Line 29: ʾš yspty ʿl hʾrṣ wʾnk bnyty mhdbʾ wbt dbltn
    which I added to the land. And I built Medeba and Beth-diblathaim
  30. Line 30: wbt bʿlmʿn wʾśʾ šm ʾt nqd ṣʾn hʾrṣ
    and Beth-baal-meon, and I led there the shepherds of the sheep of the land.
  31. Line 31: wḥwrnn yšb bh bt [dwd / blq] wyʾmr ly kmš rd hltḥm bḥwrnn
    And as for Horonaim, there dwelt in it the House of [David / Balak]. And Chemosh said to me: "Go down, fight against Horonaim!"
  32. Line 32: wʾrd wʾltḥm bqr wʾḥzh wyšb bh kmš bymy
    So I went down and fought against the city and took it; and Chemosh restored it in my days.
